We passed that night in poor fashion, because we had no tents, or wine. Some of us had bread, and few had grain and salt. But meat was plentiful as the sand itself. We ate beef, and eked it out with fat mutton for bread.
Owing to the long delay, they found it hard to get food, for there was nothing to seize outside the town. Then they burned the cadavers, because some gold byzants had been found in the bellies of the dead. And some of us cut the flesh of the bodies into pieces, and cooked and ate it.
Our men were so tormented by thirst that they drew blood from the veins of their horses and asses, and drank it. Some urinated into the hands of the others, who drank of it. Many dug into the moist ground and lay down, spreading the earth over them to allay the parching of thirst. This lasted for eight days.
And they assured the watchers that Turk's flesh was better than bacon or ham fried in oil. [...] After this the rabble often visited the cemeteries, digging up the bodies of Moslems and picking out the least decomposed to skin and hang up in the wind to dry.
