Finally, there is a good explanation of what it means in politics (as distinct from Christian theology).

It is like that joke about Gorbachev: "there is an abyss to cross to reform the USSR and he is going to do it in two brave jumps".

Bret Stephens here explains it brilliantly. He sure has a talent to spot a funny aspect and articulate it memorably.

I used to read Bret Stephens's articles in the Jerusalem Post several years back. Apparently he was the chief editor, despite being so young. He was usually joking about the French (morals of their foreign policy). Also about the EU and the UN - in short, well, the French. It was very funny and sharp and true. Once I have commented on-line that he may start making fun of more establishments and institutions - there are so many more asking for it. Why should he apply his undoubted talent to such a limited field, he begins to repeat himself. Next week he was gone, he left Israel for a bigger job. I would like to think my comment has not contributed to his decision. I kind of lost him until now.

He writes the Wall Street Journal Foreign Affairs column.
